I see that there is a lot of material here that I feel kid just want to talk about, and if no one ever brings up some of the issues than they don't get talked about and I think it says a lot to the domonant ideology that these things aren't talked about more. I think that one of the questions they are asking is,"why aren't these things talked about?"
Issues of, attraction, immigration, police brutality, pregnancey, self expression. These kids are talking in a way and what they're saying compells me to think about these issues and respond.
I really liked the "slip of the tounge" video. It started with a boy on a bench next to a girl, and he lays his best line on her. Instead of giving him a simple yes or no, she tears down his advances with thoughts about why it is that she thinks he's comming at her in the wrong way. In the end, she walks away, but he feals more enlightened and is more attracted to different aspects to women...

Listen Up Talking Points

Lauren Greenfield Talking Points
Fast Forward, it makes a lot of sence to name a photo documentary in such a way. I f you think about it, what is being a kid? Being a kid is figuring out how to be an adult and dealing with the facts that you find. So it's not suprizing to easily find many situations where kids are forced to deal with adult situations, or what we have decided to deem adult situations.
It's also interesting to compair what I see to life growing up on the East Coast. Less emphasis on ballin' with your money, but still wanting what society tells you you are too innocent to endure.
I find myself thinking of how I would raise my kids, or if I would just aid them in raising themselves. (That is to say, if I ever have kids).

Tricia Rose Talking Points
There is a lot here about how Hip Hop might have come to be, but I see a paralell to how it has emerged and been recognized. I first made this connection with the help of a trusted friend, and reofessor here at RIC, Aaron Andrade (history and appreciation of theatre). Hip Hop and Metal are the paralelled, but unique resistances to the primary culture in our society.
After reading what lead to the conndissions that lead to Hip Hop, I can say with confedence that there is truth in the phrase, "from chaos comes great inspiration."
The inovativness of how the whole Hip Hop revolution started is astonishing. Using oblolite tools and programs to make something new and cool to bring into the light the rediculousness of a modern world... ingenious!
Is it bad that I never contiously saw the obvious paralells between Hip Hop, Breakdancing, Tagging, and DJing. I love how she flows through the descriptions of all of these different forms of art as though writing, as a form af art itself, was a part of it. Writing is indeed a part of the Hip Hop movement, however less visible, sans the case of Def Poetry.
I thoroughly enjoied this reading and agree with pretty mush all of Roses main points. It was an easy read once you got how she was speaking into your head, also I liked her perpetual use of some uncommon words to augment the situations she was describing!

Prenski Talking Points Digital Natives
Right off the bat, Prenski hits on a subject that I feal has been true (at least for me) since I was in high school! The fact that the educational system in this country is and has been obsolite. It only works for about 20% of the students that use it, today's students are much different than the ones that the system was made for. TIME TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM!
One thing comes to mind when about half way throught this reading. There is another group in wich to find one's self other than Native or Immigrant. The Intuitive Contemporary, 'cause there are parts of both that are foreign to me and I have been growing with digital technology for longer than I haven't, but I still have been around while it wasn't in full use...
The world, more often than not, I feal comes to too many impasses. I have had many pointless and confusing arguments with some of my current professors about things that I never expected to have disagreements about, simply because, "that's not the way I would have done that," and more often than not I, and most of my peers, think "Who cares, it's done (fast) and that's what counts. It all stems back to a persons unwillingness to re-learn. I only hope that I can remember and retain that.

Thomas Hine Talking Points
What a way to start an essay (book). I like how he keeps going back and forth from fealings of today to fealings of his youth. I also feal like his assignment for the yearbook is quite interesting now, as it would have been in my senior year of high school.
I find that during these first few pages, I think of how I was in high school and the fact that this would never have been read by me. I aslo find myself thinking that if my 17 year old self was sitting here next to me, I couldn't help but to try and convey what an interesting idea this would be to think about...
Do parents really think that their kids need to recover from "teenagerhood?"
I'm interested in reading the last chapter (if no the whole book) about the idea of a world after teenagers.
I agree with the idea that the educational system in the world we know had attached the "youth" to the family for much longer than it previously has. Class today
So I won't be able to come to class today because I have tech at 5 pm and It's manditory in terms of me graduating from my department. Also the shop has to finish building the show and my senior project is being the shop forman...
So I will be around next week. Dr. Bogad, I will come by and see you sometime this week!
